At the Box Office: ‘Battle of the Sexes,’‘American Made,’‘Flatliners’ and Kingsman: Golden Circle’

(WRIC) — Real Life stories nominated the list of new movies that are hitting the theaters this weekend.

“Battle of the Sexes” takes moviegoers back to the early 1970’s when a tennis match captivated the public. Bobby Riggs, played by Steve Carrell, was an ex men’s tennis champ to challenged young superstar Bilie Jean King, played by Emma Stone, to a no holds bar televised tennis match. Billed as the battle of the sexes, it attracted 90 million viewers. The film takes viewers behind the scenes of the match for the off the court battles and drama  that were going on. The drama is rated PG-13.

“American Made” is also a true story. It stars Tom Cruise as a TWA pilot who’s recruited by the CIA in the 1970’s to spy to fly over and spy on latin american countries. Undercover, he ends up running drugs, guns and other illegal items and gets caught up in some shady US covert foreign affairs that begin making newspaper headlines. From the Director of “Edge of Tomorrow,” the comedy is rated R.

“Flatliners” is a remake of the early 90’s film where five medical students experiment on themselves to see what lies on the other side.. All of them end up confronting the sins and dark moments of their past as they get deeper and deeper into their testing of the afterlife. Starring Ellen Page, Nina Dobrev, Diego Luna and Kiefer Sutherland, the film is rated PG-13.

” Kingsman: Golden Circle” is expected to win the box office for a second straight weekend. It could make around another 20 million dollars this weekend.
